Core Elections

The Core holds elections for positions usually once a year in the Winter Semester. There are two rounds of elections: the first is open only to current core members, and the second is open to sub-core (with the possibility that members could run too). The core will be holding elections the Thurday, March 10. After this point, we'll have a list of vacant positions, most likely to include webmaster, fundraising, and publicity. Open positions will be officially announced on March 14th and interested parties are required to fill out an application (will be sent via email and posted on the website). The application is due March 21st by noon. Serious applicants will be interviewed at the March 24th core meeting in the MSA Chambers (3rd floor of Union) at 6:00pm. The election procedure and qualifications have been recently revised and will fully come into effect for the 2005-2006 year.

If you are interested in becoming a member of the core, please email Chapter President Jessica Tebor at tebs@umich.edu.

UM HFH Board of Directors Elections Guidelines As of March 10, 2004

  1. The UMHFH Board of Directors (BOD) is made up of the following elected positions: President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, Fundraising Chairperson(s), Volunteer Coordinator, Publicity Chairperson(s), Campus Relations, Community Relations, Technology Coordinator, and Collegiate Challenge Coordinator. During an election, the applicants for these positions will be filled in this prescribed order, unless a current BOD member who is possibly vacating his/her position needs to be placed in order for another current member to run in that position.
  2. The Leadership Transition and Chapter Development (LTCD) Sub-Committee of BOD will determine which positions are available for election in a given year. The members of this committee are the President, Fundraising Chairperson, Publicity Chairperson and Technology Coordinator. The LTCD will also determine the final order of election and contingencies prior to the start of the elections night.
  3. Positions are open to any University of Michigan (UM) student who has reached a Sub-Core status in the Chapter Membership System by two weeks prior to the election date, or has previously served in another capacity on the BOD. (Effective for 2005-2006 Election)
  4. Persons wishing to run for the office of President or Vice President must meet the following requirements:

    - Participated in at least one week of Collegiate Challenge experience, national or internationally sanctioned HFHI event. (May be waived if no individuals desiring to run qualify)
    - Served at least one year (two semesters) in any other UM BOD position.
    - Be present at the time of the election to deliver a speech and be interviewed by the BOD, except for unforeseen circumstances which will be handled on a case by case basis lead by the LTCD. (Effective for 2005-2006 Election)
  5. Students studying abroad during the winter semester may run for position as long as they have met all the requirements specified for the position while they were on campus. They are not eligible to run for President or Vice President because they cannot complete the third requirement of the office which stipulates their presence at time of election. (Effective for 2005-2006 Election)
  6. Elections will occur by the conclusion of the month of March of each year. The general membership election, available positions, and descriptions of those positions will be announced via the web page and the email list.
  7. Candidates should notify the current President and LTCD of their interest in running for an office. No nomination is necessary to run for an office. Current BOD members have the right to retain their position without election if they have received with an affirmative year end evaluation by the BOD. Evaluations will be coordinated by the LTCD and results will be reported to the BOD prior to the election slate determinations.
  8. The LTCD will oversee the distribution and collection of candidate information via BOD application, which must be received prior to the day of election.
  9. Each BOD candidate must be given adequate time to voice their qualifications at a BOD interviewing meeting before the election.
  10. Elections are held via secret ballot following the BOD meeting at which the candidates are introduced. Members of the current BOD are the voting participants.
  11. Votes are counted and reported by the current President and LTCD. No LTCD member who is running for a position can be present in the counting of the votes for that position.
  12. At any point, the BOD has the power, with input from the LTCD, to appoint provisional BOD members who have limited responsibilities and powers as determined by the BOD at the of appointment. Permanent BOD positions can only be created after a position has been in enacted as provisional for at least two semesters.
