Volunteering with UM Habitat for Humanity
There are several ways to volunteer with UMHFH. Click on the options below to find out how!
- Sign up on the website
- Come to our Chapter Meetings
- Contact our Work Coordinator to reserve a day for a group
Also, check out the Membership Guidelines below.
1. Sign up on the website
All of our events are listed on our Volunteer page. If you have not done so before, simply register as a member, login on any page and, click on the event you want to volunteer for and sign up!
2. Come to our Chapter Meetings
We meet approximately every other Monday of year in a room of the Michigan Union at 7:30 PM. Check out our Calendar to see the dates and locations. See Chapter Meeting Minutes to catch up on what happened at our last meeting. You can also get involved in any of our six committees at these meetings.
3. Contact our Volunteer Coordinator
If you are in charge of a group that is interested in "reserving" a build day, contact our Volunteer Coordinator, Chris Soto. A complete packet of information for group reservations will be posted on the Volunteer Committee page by the end of October.
Membership Guidelines
[Updated 9/7/2004]
Habitat for Humanity’s volunteers deserve encouragement and recognition for their hard work. Furthermore, a lot of people have wondered what it takes to be a member of the U of M chapter. With our new Membership guidelines, we have addressed both of these issues.
Volunteers earn “nails” for each Habitat activity that he or she participates in; volunteers must sign-in at each event to qualify for nails. As seen below, some activities earn more nails than others, but all activities are important. Any Habitat related event would involve nails, even if it is not specifically listed. As the year progresses, volunteers are placed into one of four levels, depending on the number of nails earned.
Activity Nails
1. Events attended or volunteered at (including build days and homeless breakfasts)-30 nails
2. Committee involvement (must attend 3 meetings to qualify, 10 nails added for each additional meeting attended)-30 nails
3. Collegiate Challenge-150 nails
4. Mass Meeting Attendance-10 nails
5. Flyering/Chalking-10 nails
6. Volunteer of the month (picked by the core)-30 nails
7. Donation Campaign, 1 check received-5 points, 10 points for each additional check received in your name
Membership Levels (Awarded in April)
Volunteers: 50 nails earned
Members: 180 nails earned
Sub-Core: 320 nails earned; must attend leadership meeting
Core: Elected by previous year’s core; must reach sub-core to be considered for the core.
Finally, at the end of the year, all of our volunteers will receive Habitat-inspired awards! The more you help Habitat, the better the awards!
Awards
Volunteers: Certificate of recognition
Members: Certificate and nail pouch
Sub-Core: Certificate, nail pouch, and hammer
Habitat volunteers have an immediate and influential impact on society. For all the hours volunteers dedicate to ridding the world of substandard housing, they deserve respect and recognition!
