Our Story
Habitat for Humanity at the University of Michigan has a rich history that is deeply intertwined with the broader mission of this global organization. Habitat for Humanity, founded on the ambitious vision "to eliminate poverty housing and homelessness from the face of the earth by building adequate and basic housing," represents a worldwide movement dedicated to providing decent, affordable homes for families in need. This mission was inspired by the concept of "partnership housing," where those in need of shelter would work side by side with volunteers to construct simple and decent houses, emphasizing a shared commitment to building a better future.
The origins of Habitat for Humanity can be traced back to Koinonia Farm in Georgia, where this innovative approach to housing first took shape. It was at Koinonia Farm in the late 1940s that the concept of partnership housing was born, planting the seeds for the global Habitat for Humanity movement. This approach recognized that providing shelter to those in need required not just charity but collaboration, as the beneficiaries actively participated in the construction of their homes, fostering a sense of pride, responsibility, and community.
The University of Michigan's involvement with Habitat for Humanity began in 1996 when its chapter was established in association with Huron Valley's. Since its inception, Habitat for Humanity at the University of Michigan has been deeply committed to advancing the organization's mission both locally and globally. Its dedicated volunteers have played a crucial role in building homes for families in the Ann Arbor area and supporting Habitat for Humanity's initiatives worldwide, aligning with the core principles of partnership housing and the belief that every person deserves a safe and decent place to call home.
Over the years, the University of Michigan chapter of Habitat for Humanity has continued to grow and make a significant impact in the fight against poverty housing and homelessness. We are committed to the organization's mission, not only in constructing houses, but also a commitment to building hope, dignity, and a brighter future for families in need, making a lasting difference in the local and global community.
